Today, as the broadcaster and conservationist celebrates his 100th birthday, his influence still stretches far beyond television.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSir David Attenborough didn\u2019t just bring the world into Brits\u2019 living rooms, he made them desperate to get out and explore it,\u201d Tom Orr, worldwide travel specialist at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theluxuryholidaycompany.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Luxury Holiday Company<\/a>, tells <em>Elite Traveler<\/em>. \u201cFor many travelers, their dream holidays started on the sofa, watching <em>Planet Earth<\/em> or <em>Blue Planet<\/em>. Few luxury operators understand that connection better than <a href=\"https:\/\/www.elewanacollection.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Elewana Collection<\/a>, whose lodges and camps stretch across Kenya and Tanzania.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSir David Attenborough\u2019s work has made the public aware of the African continent and the dangers that Africa\u2019s wildlife faces,\u201d says the brand.<\/p>\n<p>Attenborough and his team also stayed at Elsa\u2019s Kopje in Kenya\u2019s Meru National Park while filming naked mole rats \u2013 the curious underground creatures responsible for the tiny soil mounds scattered across the landscape.<\/p>\n<p>Today, Elewana continues to champion the slower, wildlife-focused safari style Attenborough helped popularize, pairing intimate camps with conservation-led tourism.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Sukau Rainforest Lodge, Borneo<\/h3>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/elitetraveler.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2026\/05\/cropped_pat-whelen-7h4yibuv3ms-unsplash-2560x1707.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-260964\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Borneo is one of the only places in the world to see orangutans in their wild habitat \u00a9Unsplash<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cBorneo is the place I\u2019ve visited most,\u201d Attenborough told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/travel\/2015\/dec\/21\/david-attenborough-great-barrier-reef-australia\"><em>The Guardian<\/em><\/a> in 2015. \u201cIts rainforest is full of riches and secrets, but it doesn\u2019t give them up easily.\u201d He first visited the island in the 1950s to encounter wild orangutans, later returning in 2011 to film for the BBC while staying at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sukau.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Sukau Rainforest Lodge<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Perched on the Kinabatangan River floodplain, the rustic luxury lodge remains deeply proud of the connection. Photos of Attenborough line the walls, one villa bears his name, and the boat used by the BBC crew has even been repurposed as the breakfast buffet table. The BBC crew stayed across the operator\u2019s camps, including Nsefu Camp and Tena Tena, while the series also spotlighted the work of the Zambian Carnivore Programme, with whom the company has partnered for more than a decade.<\/p>\n<p>South Luangwa still feels thrillingly raw, but Attenborough\u2019s involvement helped place international attention on the region\u2019s conservation-led safaris rather than high-volume tourism.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Tirimbina Eco Lodge, Costa Rica<\/h3>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/elitetraveler.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2026\/05\/ma_dsqr_1723809541_3435885919678594708_279389155.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-260941\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Tirimbina Eco Lodge is part rainforest lodge, part research station in the La Tirimbina Biological Reserve \u00a9Tirimbina Eco Lodge<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>For Attenborough, Costa Rica has long represented one of conservation\u2019s great success stories.
