Sir David Attenborough has spent the majority of his life on Earth taking viewers to the furthest corners of the planet \u2013 from the depths of the Pacific <\/a>to the ice shelves of Antarctica <\/a>\u2013 while making generations of armchair naturalists desperate to see those places for themselves. Today, as the broadcaster and conservationist celebrates his 100th birthday, his influence still stretches far beyond television.<\/p>\n

\u201cSir David Attenborough didn\u2019t just bring the world into Brits\u2019 living rooms, he made them desperate to get out and explore it,\u201d Tom Orr, worldwide travel specialist at The Luxury Holiday Company<\/a>, tells Elite Traveler<\/em>. \u201cFor many travelers, their dream holidays started on the sofa, watching Planet Earth<\/em> or Blue Planet<\/em>. But over time, Attenborough didn\u2019t just inspire trips \u2013 he changed attitudes.\u201d<\/p>\n

The so-called \u201cAttenborough effect\u201d ultimately became about more than wanderlust, forcing audiences and the travel industry alike to confront tourism\u2019s relationship with fragile ecosystems and endangered wildlife.<\/p>\n

For many travelers, their first glimpse of East Africa\u2019s wildlife came not on safari, but through Attenborough\u2019s documentaries. Few luxury operators understand that connection better than Elewana Collection<\/a>, whose lodges and camps stretch across Kenya and Tanzania.<\/p>\n

\u201cSir David Attenborough\u2019s work has made the public aware of the African continent and the dangers that Africa\u2019s wildlife faces,\u201d says the brand.<\/p>\n

Attenborough and his team also stayed at Elsa\u2019s Kopje in Kenya\u2019s Meru National Park while filming naked mole rats \u2013 the curious underground creatures responsible for the tiny soil mounds scattered across the landscape.<\/p>\n

\u201cBorneo is the place I\u2019ve visited most,\u201d Attenborough told The Guardian<\/em><\/a> in 2015. \u201cIts rainforest is full of riches and secrets, but it doesn\u2019t give them up easily.\u201d He first visited the island in the 1950s to encounter wild orangutans, later returning in 2011 to film for the BBC while staying at Sukau Rainforest Lodge<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Perched on the Kinabatangan River floodplain, the rustic luxury lodge remains deeply proud of the connection. Photos of Attenborough line the walls, one villa bears his name, and the boat used by the BBC crew has even been repurposed as the breakfast buffet table. More significantly, the lodge named Attenborough one of its Conservation Fellows in recognition of his contribution to awareness around the Kinabatangan ecosystem.<\/p>\n

Lizard Island Resort, Australia<\/h3>\n

While not directly connected to the resort itself, guests at Lizard Island Resort<\/a> can visit the nearby Australian Museum\u2019s Lizard Island Research Station, a world-renowned coral reef facility that played a role in Attenborough\u2019s reef research and now hosts around 100 scientific projects annually.<\/p>\n

Though the island has evolved into a byword for barefoot luxury, Attenborough himself has long argued tourism and conservation can coexist \u201cif they behave in a proper way.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n

Robin Pope Safaris, Zambia<\/h3>\n

The predators of Zambia\u2019s South Luangwa starred in Kingdom<\/em>, the BBC wildlife series narrated by Attenborough that followed the lives of lions, leopards, hyenas, and painted dogs across the Nsefu Sector over four years.<\/p>\n

For Robin Pope Safaris<\/a>, the production was especially personal. The BBC crew stayed across the operator\u2019s camps, including Nsefu Camp and Tena Tena, while the series also spotlighted the work of the Zambian Carnivore Programme, with whom the company has partnered for more than a decade.<\/p>\n

South Luangwa still feels thrillingly raw, but Attenborough\u2019s involvement helped place international attention on the region\u2019s conservation-led safaris rather than high-volume tourism.<\/p>\n

Tirimbina Eco Lodge, Costa Rica<\/h3>\n

That same spirit runs through the country\u2019s eco-tourism industry. \u201cGuests aren\u2019t only seeing incredible wildlife, they\u2019re also seeing a country that\u2019s made conservation part of its identity,\u201d says Cassie Stickland, senior product manager at Saga Holidays.<\/p>\n

One stop on Saga\u2019s Wild Costa Rica tour is La Tirimbina Biological Reserve in Sarapiqu\u00ed, home to Tirimbina Eco Lodge<\/a>, a rainforest eco-lodge and research station dedicated to sustainable tourism and environmental education.<\/p>\n
