{"id":4148,"date":"2026-05-21T16:39:27","date_gmt":"2026-05-21T16:39:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/facesjournal.com\/?p=4148"},"modified":"2026-05-21T16:39:27","modified_gmt":"2026-05-21T16:39:27","slug":"gilded-age-meets-keith-haring-at-the-louis-vuitton-2027-cruise-show","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/facesjournal.com\/?p=4148","title":{"rendered":"Gilded Age Meets Keith Haring at the Louis Vuitton 2027 Cruise Show"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>At New York&#8217;s Frick Collection, women\u2019s artistic director Nicolas Ghesqui\u00e8re reflects on how the city&#8217;s contrasting cultural energy inspired his latest collection.\u00a0<\/p>\n<div><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"214\" height=\"300\" src=\"https:\/\/elitetraveler.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2026\/05\/look_56-214x300.jpg\" class=\"attachment-medium size-medium wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\" \/><\/div>\n<p>Downtown met uptown as the Gilded Age opulence encountered East Village graffiti in a memorable cruise show by Louis Vuitton,\u00a0showcasing\u00a0a collection that underlined the\u00a0relevance\u00a0of travel\u00a0to\u00a0style today.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Staged among the most important private art collection in the Americas, the Frick Gallery on Fifth Avenue, the show\u2019s leit motif was the art of Keith Haring, the Lower East Side street artist currently enjoying a retrospective in the Brant Foundation downtown.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Vuitton\u2019s women\u2019s creative director Nicolas Ghesqui\u00e8re decided to stage\u00a0the\u00a0show in the Frick after a trip to <a href=\"https:\/\/elitetraveler.com\/travel\/destination-guides\/north-america\/new-york-destination-guide\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">New York<\/a> in November\u00a0when he marvelled at architect Annabelle Selldorf\u2019s\u00a0fresh\u00a0and critically acclaimed $220m renovation of the famed Beaux Arts mansion, built in 1914 for the greatest steel baron of the early 20th\u202fcentury.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs a foreigner, I am always impressed by this duality in New York. There are two cities in one \u2013 a downtown and uptown confrontation where you continually ask where is the limit? Where is the frontier? Where do they merge?\u201d\u00a0said\u202fGhesqui\u00e8re in\u00a0a\u00a0pre-show preview with\u00a0<em>Elite Traveler.<\/em>\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/elitetraveler.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2026\/05\/look_55.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-262107\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">\u00a9Filippo Fior, Gorunway.com<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>After returning to <a href=\"https:\/\/elitetraveler.com\/travel\/destination-guides\/europe\/paris\">Paris<\/a>, the designer was served further inspiration by a documentary on Keith Haring, and the street artist\u2019s graphic characters populated the show: the radiant children, flying devils, and barking dogs.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The brand\u2019s archivist revealed LV had purchased a 1930 leather Vuitton suitcase that Haring had decorated in 1984 with his most loved icon \u2013 the radiant child. The original Vuitton\/Haring case appeared in the show\u2019s opening look: a red silk cardigan, slouchy jeans, and the first of many Space Age \u201cliquorice leather\u201d boots.\u202f\u202f\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A baby crawls over the latest distressed leather\u00a0mini Vuitton\u00a0bag, images of which could be seen on bus-stop advertising panels throughout Manhattan even before the show.\u202f\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The whole color palette featured what the designer termed Haring\u2019s \u201cnon-neon, not completely fluorescent\u201d bright colours \u2013 here seen in very delicate, transparent acid-hued knitwear, with black Haring-style graphic outlines. For cocktail hour and Coachella, Haring\u2019s barking dogs or Big Apple motifs were implanted on intriguing origami satin silk tops. Elsewhere, the artist\u2019s signature squiggles were reinterpreted as sexy spaghetti-like labyrinth cocktail dresses in stretch taffeta or guipure lace.\u202f\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a homage to casual sophistication, the foundation of fashion in America,\u201d underlined Ghesqui\u00e8re, who teamed double-denim Levi\u2019s jeans and jacket with worker boots when he took his bow.\u202f\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><em>See also: <a href=\"https:\/\/elitetraveler.com\/shopping-lifestyle\/jonathan-anderson-dior-cruise-2027-los-angeles\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Dior\u2019s Star-Studded LA Cruise Show Marks a New Era for the House<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/elitetraveler.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2026\/05\/look_51.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-262103\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">\u00a9Filippo Fior, Gorunway.com<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>As ever with\u202fGhesqui\u00e8re, the collection was a meeting of active sportswear, chic futurism, and couture-quality French fashion, which was best seen in the finale with remarkable athletic jumpsuits, burnished denim trackpants, or a macram\u00e9 leather skirt. A skirt was paired with a remarkable leather intarsia jacket featuring a barking dog biting a human figure, a reference to Haring\u2019s activism in defending a gay community under attack, and raising awareness about safe sex. Haring died at 31 of AIDS in Greenwich Village, but his influence on the art scene remains significant, and his murals can be found throughout Europe and the U.S.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u202fIn terms of tailoring, the designer echoed the prim tuxedos of the\u00a0robber\u00a0barons of the Gilded Age, when the United States overtook Britain as the world\u2019s largest economy.\u00a0Ghesqui\u00e8re\u00a0showed\u00a0truncated tuxedoes with superhero lapels in Haring\u2019s electric blues and crimson red. Plus,\u00a0he\u00a0played on the museum\u2019s cameo brooches in flowing jacquard hand-embroidered tops, though worn with stretch leggings and rolled liquorice leather sneakers and boots \u2013 uptown topping downtown again.\u202f\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s the two worlds of New York, combined but never in a simple way.\u202fKeith Haring started downtown with street art, before his graffiti evolved into shows in galleries uptown and then everywhere around the world. He was a pioneer in liberation in many ways and expressions for many people. And I think we all need that right now,\u201d\u00a0he said.\u202f\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>New York\u2019s punchy winner-takes-all culture reverberated with a trio of boxing glove bags in pebbled monogram canvas. The Frick\u2019s famed collection of\u00a0objets\u00a0d\u2019art inspired several Ionic-column leather handbags.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/elitetraveler.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2026\/05\/look_52.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-262104\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">\u00a9 Filippo Fior, Gorunway.com<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cThe Frick is such a unique place and experience. I almost felt there was a ghost here inspiring us this season,\u201d chuckled the 55-year-old designer, whose previous cruise show in New York seven years ago was in a diametrically opposed setting \u2013 Eero Saarinen\u2019s sweeping concrete TWA terminal at JFK airport.\u00a0\u202f\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Ghesqui\u00e8re\u2019s clothes will always be attention-seeking fashion. They are rarely an easy wear, and demand panache and acres of self-confidence to pull off, which helps explain Nicolas\u2019 cult following among actresses and celebrities. Jennifer Campbell, Emma Stone, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Cate Blanchett, Iris Law, and Amy Adams all sat front row dramatically in Vuitton.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In an interview in <em>Elite Traveler&#8217;s <\/em>Spring issue, CEO <a href=\"https:\/\/elitetraveler.com\/shopping-lifestyle\/louis-vuitton-ceo-pietro-beccari-exclusive-interview\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Pietro Beccari <\/a>insisted that \u201cVuitton is not a fashion brand,\u201d and this collection was proof of that. Vuitton is a luxury lifestyle travel marque, and what makes Ghesqui\u00e8re the ideal designer for Vuitton is that he constantly voyages into fresh territory, blending artistic imagery, bravura technique,\u00a0and\u00a0dramatic silhouettes to take clients and admirers into new worlds. This is ideal for a cruise collection. Movie actresses and K-pop stars in the West Wing beneath the oils of Rembrandt, Vel\u00e1squez, and Turner. Editors in the Garden Court between the classical bronze busts. VICs in the East Gallery with Hogarth, Constable, and Renoir, or\u202fmarching down Selldorf\u2019s new cantilevered stairway in veined Breccia Aurora marble, which the <em>New York Times<\/em> described as \u201cdecadent in a dolce vita sort of way.\u201d\u202f\u202f\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The setting bizarrely juxtaposed with the music \u2013 a selection of electroclash hits by Peaches.\u202fPost-show, guests feted Ghesqui\u00e8re inside Maxime\u2019s, the exclusive Anglo-Chintz super club that is Robin Bierley\u2019s new outpost on the Upper East Side.\u202fLuxury may be suffering from a downturn this past year, but one had little sense of that at Maxime\u2019s, where security covered mobile phone cameras with tape, and guests dined on oysters smothered in caviar, Dom Perignon, and the best whisky sours in town.
